CULTURES OF CHINA WATER CUBE CUP (Chinese Songs Contest 2024)

On July 24, 2024, the Shaolin Kungfu Chinese Restaurant in Lagos was transformed into a hub of musical brilliance as it hosted the Cultures of China Water Cube Cup “Chinese Songs Contest 2024” final competition. This event, organized by the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos in collaboration with the Huaxing Art Troupe, was a celebration of music, culture, and the enduring friendship between China and Nigeria.

The Water Cube Cup is an annual singing competition that promotes Chinese language and culture through the universal medium of music. It attracts participants from across the globe, who compete by singing popular Chinese songs. This year’s contest in Lagos was no exception, drawing a diverse group of talented singers who showcased their skills and passion for Chinese music.

Among the standout performers were two female students from Efe Best Chinese Training School (EBCTS), Chinyere Melody Ugwu and Akeem Abibat Funmilayo, both HSK 3 students. Their performances captivated the audience and judges alike, earning them accolades and substantial cash prizes.

Chinyere Ugwu delivered a soulful rendition that earned her the 8th position and a cash prize of 200,000 Naira. Her performance was marked by its emotional depth and technical precision, showcasing her mastery of the Chinese language and musical talent.

Akeem Funmilayo, with her powerful and emotive singing, secured the 5th position, also winning a cash prize of 200,000 Naira. Her performance was a highlight of the evening, reflecting her dedication and passion for Chinese music. Both students’ achievements were a testament to their hard work and the excellent training provided by EBCTS.

The Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, her Excellency Yan Yuqing, in her speech, highlighted the importance of cultural exchanges in fostering mutual understanding and strengthening the bonds between China and Nigeria. Consul General Yan also said that music is the best bridge and bond to interpret “the friendship between peoples makes the friendship between countries strong”, and it can cross thousands of miles of mountains and seas to promote the mutual understanding of peoples and mutual learning of civilizations. Since the competition was held, singing masters from all walks of life in China and Nigeria have gathered together to express their feelings through songs and play the harmonious movement of China-Nigeria friendship. Consul General Yan wished the contestants good results. At the wonderful music feast, she praised the participants for their outstanding performances and also commended EBCTS for its role in promoting Chinese language and culture in Nigeria. The collaboration with the Huaxing Art Troupe added an authentic touch to the event, with their performances enhancing the cultural experience.

Chinyere Melody Ugwu and Akeem Abibat Funmilayo’s success at the Water Cube Cup underscores the growing influence of Chinese cultural education in Nigeria.
